I was on a video conference call on the morning of 14th March 2022 when my wife calmly entered the room and told me that we had to leave because our building was on fire. We quickly gathered up our cats and opened the front door to a hallway choked with thick, black smoke. Ducking low and feeling our way along the wall, we managed to escape without harm. However, everything was left behind. Money, clothes, medications, music, all of it. We stood across the street and watched our home burn, completely numb and with no idea of what to do next.
The weeks that followed are still a blur. We managed to find temporary housing through the kindness of strangers, but a hazy feeling of displacement hung over us like the very smoke that had driven us from our home. We paraded through a seemingly endless stream of potential living spaces, never finding what we felt could be our new sanctum. Meanwhile, my wife valiantly struggled to retrieve our belongings from the ruins of our old apartment while I worked to keep us afloat.
At long last we found a new place to live and moved in with what little we had left. The rebuilding began and finally, exhausted, things started to return to normal. Dreams of the fire still haunt the both of us, but each day sees us further and further away from the fear and stress and settling more and more into our new life in our new space.
These recordings are an audio representation of that journey. Expressing the panic, frustration, and aching tiredness of those days through music has greatly helped me process all that had occured and makes me deeply appreciate how fortunate we really were to come out the other side of the experience and find not only a new life, but a better one.

I'm sitting on my deck at 5:06 am; it's 52°F/11°C, humid but calm, and the stars and planets seem brighter than usual (Jupiter in particular, just risen over the trees, could almost cast shadows all on its own). I'm fortified against the cool weather with a hoodie, a snifter of vanilla cognac, and this, Helge's lovely final album... and I am at peace. I feel genuinely soothed in a way I haven't felt in such a long time.
Sincere thanks to all who helped see this album through to its release. Scott
