This recording took place on one afternoon after a series of encounters that I had with Daniel Carter in New York City. For our first meeting we shared an afternoon meal at a local Thai restaurant not far from Daniel’s apartment in the East Village. As we shared a bowl of rice over stir fried vegetables we talked about the state of the world. Daniel shared some stories about his first years in New York City and memories of listening and playing in collective settings in NY. I shared some of my experiences trying to seek out bridges between the arts and radical social activism. At the end of lunch Daniel proclaimed that the conversation was our first jam and was open to us conversing together through instruments. For our next encounter we played and recorded duets in a church space, the Good Shepherd Bay Ridge church, thanks to Pastor Juan Carlos Ruiz. Those recordings have been reworked by multiple awesome artists into a remix album that will be out in 2024.
This release was recorded during our third encounter, which went down at the Scholes Street Studio in Brooklyn. For the session we played a lot, exchanging, looking, listening and responding. Daniel arrived with a bunch of different instruments and a determination to do something special, I felt it and was honoured. These recordings are about honouring an encounter across cities, across experiences, across borders and across generations, a dialogue that I hope you will resonate with. Thank you for listening. –– Stefan Christoff, November 2023.
