It’s a tricky thing, reviewing instrumental music. Tricky but satisfying. Especially if you go in blind, so to speak, with only the barest of hints as to what you are about to face. But that is my preferred way. I take music seriously, or at least, I take serious music seriously. Music that is made with intent, with care and with commitment. Emotional music. I take it seriously indeed, but boy do I enjoy it. My favourite albums, albums that I return to often, that I know will move me in some way, these are my dearest possessions. And I love the adventure and thrill of new music, of discovering something wonderful, something that delivers new and diverse pleasures. But there is so much music out there, you have to be guided to some extent. When I was sent this album, I immediately thought, “Hello, this is going to be something.” On one of my favourite labels, the consistently interesting Shimmering Moods, the album title resonated, and the artwork intrigued. But what really struck me was the artist’s name, Linus Schrab. A name I was well aware of already as part of Thet Liturgiske Owasendet (THET) and as V I C I M – I have well-loved releases from both – but this was my first run-in with an eponymous release. Interesting…..

And it’s circumstances like this where you have a choice: you can seek out a review or two, ask about, see what the community thinks, or you can dive in. But then here we are, back to things being tricky. Uncharted water, and the only sure way to navigate is, funnily enough, to surrender, immerse yourself, and feel. Good music, music created with the need to communicate ‘something’, with honesty and intent, will guide you and reveal, well, that’s up to you.

I hope you don’t mind, but I think you should listen to It Must Have Been Love now, see what you think.

Good, isn’t it? Really rather special. I have been back to this album no end of times since the first listen. It is captivating and rewarding, revealing something extra, something new, something secret, with each listen. For me, it is a tense beauty that seems to hide a sadness that never wallows in melancholy. Unresolved events of the past haunt but never overwhelm. Understandings dawn. As part of THET or as V I C I M, Linus’s music often manifests a tension, but here it sounds personal, introspective. Perhaps that is why he chose to release it under his own name?

But that might not be it. I’m probably wrong. But that’s the beauty of exceptional albums like this. One can never truly know, can never exhaust the intrigue, can never stop wondering.
