Liz Helman and Dominic Hemy met in 2019 at a gig in which they were both playing. With a shared love of drones and twisting soundscapes, they would quickly devise a plan that would sprout into Urban Eden. Approaching the project from very different roads, their first album, Building Gardens From Concrete, blossomed in Spring 2020. Work quickly began on their follow-up, and despite a few delays from outside influences, Residual Tales is now due in November 2022 via Shimmering Moods Records.
Constructing upon the foundations laid by the first Urban Eden album, a vast exchange of material flowed between the two. By layering, deconstructing, remixing, and generally messing with each other’s ideas, the shape of Residual Tales began to emerge: dark lonesome nights punctuated by flashes of hope, brooding expanses hiding slivers of a forgotten paradise. Accompanied by Liz’s evocative imagery, this time Dominic has composed little stories tapping into the heart of each of the eight tales that make up the record.
Liz Helman is a multi-disciplinary artist, working in time-based media. Her work, both visual and sonic, is a response to place and environment. Beginning her process with field recordings, she then makes immersive and mesmerising drone based compositions exploring different layers of sound and texture. Primarily using guitars and Theremins (though anything that can make a strange sound will do), Dominic Hemy has been crafting aural landscapes for nearly two decades as both a solo artist, and as one half of the eclectic kosmische-prog-ambient experiment The Resonance Association.
